When it comes to birthday presents for my friends I am slightly ashamed to say that I never know what to get them. Most of my friends already have everything and I absolutely hate it when they tell me they me they don’t want anything. That just bothers me to no end because I want to be a good friend who gives a gift that looks like I put some thought into it. Just giving my really close friends a gift card isn’t enough for me because I am a self-proclaimed overachiever.
November just so happened to be the time when it seemed like everyone had a birthday and I was scrambling to make sure that I texted everyone and posted on their Facebook wall on their birthday. Since this was my first semester of college this year, I realized that everything is really expensive! Well, I realized that before but now that I was living in another state and paying for school on my own, I became so much more conscious of my budget. I had one close friend whose birthday was at the end of November and I had absolutely no idea what to get him. So, I did what I always do when I have no idea what to do in most situations. I started browsing Pinterest. I came across the idea to make a gift basket for a present. It was full of snack foods and such. I mean, what guy doesn’t love junk food? I noticed that everything in the basket was orange and the caption said that you can use whatever color you want. Then it dawned on me. I could make this a theme basket! My friend and I have so many inside jokes and we always think stupid puns are funny. So I came up with this idea. I would put a note in the basket that would say “Orange you glad it’s your birthday?” and fill it with treats that were all in orange packaging. He loved it and I decided I would share this awesome idea with you!
Here is a list of the things I used for this basket:
- Cardboard box
- Washi tape
- Cupcake window box
- Note card
And then I filled it with these treats. Honestly, you can put whatever you want in it that is orange.
- Orange Mountain Dew (I found it at Wal-Mart, but I can’t remember what the exact flavor is)
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- Reese’s Pieces
- Trident gum – Tropical flavor
- Orange Tic Tacs
- Pens (you will see why I added this)
I got one of these little treat boxes with the windows so I could put the smaller treats in it and attach the note to inside of the box.
I then filled the box with the Reese’s Pieces, Peanut Butter Cups, Tic Tacs, and gum.
I had colored note cards and I wrote ” ‘Orange’ you glad it’s your birthday?” on it and attached it to the inside facing upwards so it’s visible through the window.
My friend has this bad habit of losing pens all the time, so when I found these pens in a partially orange package I just had to put them in the basket, too. I used a gift tag to write a little message and I attached it to the pen package with washi tape.
To “spice up” the boring cardboard box I made a pattern all around the box with the same washi tape I used earlier and attached a card to the front that said “Happy Birthday.” I filled the box with the bigger soda, Cheetos, Starbursts, pens, and the smaller box and slipped his birthday card inside. This is the finished project!
